Madison County Historical Society

Use our libraries to research a project, an ancestor or look for a town or city.  Volunteers are available to help you every step of the way.

Family History and Genealogy

The public is invited to use our libraries and materials to look for family histories, special projects and subject research.  The Nicholson Research Library and the Genealogy Library are both tremendous resources for any research project.  We have and are continuing to update and add to our databases.  Our volunteers are eager to help you find the information you seek.

Family Files are kept on Madison County families and include approximately 2,700 family names and files.  We keep these records and documents for the use of our members, historians, and interested family genealogists.  Family chart names number about 15,000 names.  We encourage all interested researches to add your family history to our collection by either sending us an Ancestral Family Chart, family stories, and/or books you or a relative has written.

Items and materials can be brought to the MCHS offices where we will copy the information and return the originals to you.  Out-of-state or county friends can mail any material to us.  Also, if there are family items and documents(even bibles) you no long care to keep, we do take donations.  There is only one requirement and that is any family charts, histories, stories, photos and other documents MUST be about ancestors of Madison County.

We are open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are located at 15 West 11th Street, Anderson, Indiana.  Our mailing address is Madison County Historical Society, P. O. Box 696, Anderson, IN  46015-0696.  If you wish any mailed material back, please include instructions to that effect, a return address, and postage.

Please be aware that we can not do complete family histories, however, if you would like a search for birth, death, obits, and/or other family information, we can help you.  Since much of our correspondence is now in the form of e-mails which can get your requests done quickly, feel free to use the form below.  The form has a message box that expands, so please, fully explain what your query is about, include such items as dates(1884), names, (i.e. Joseph Daniel Jones), father's name, professions(i.e. farmer, wood cutter), and locations(i.e. townships; cities like Anderson, Pendleton).
