MCHS Is Looking for Historic Items The Madison County Historical Society is looking for the following items and materials: Madison County High School Annuals- pre 1960 Records in Family Bibles(we can copy) County and City Directories and Plat Books Pictures of pre-1960 Madison County events, factories, stores, schools, streets, fairs, parades, parks, eateries, airports, theaters, military(Civil War, Spanish American War, WW I, WW II, Korean Conflict, prisoner of war), gas wells, zoos, circus, glass factories, canal project, interurban, grain elevators, farm families, family reunions, community leaders, fraternal organizations, attorney organizations, physicians and their offices, streetcars, horse and wagon deliveries, hotels, filling stations, depots, towns in the county(Frankton, Elwood, Gilman, Orestes, Alexandria, Bloomer, Hardscrapple, Dundee, Quick City, Lapel, Fishersburg, Markleville, Pendleton, Perkinsville, Moonsville, Prosperity, Florida Station, Chesterfield, Linwood, California Crossing, Ingalls, Mt. Pleasant, Emporia, Alliance, Alfont, Bruin or Grabers' Station, Keller's Station, Sly Fork Station, Zinsberg, Mercury, Prospect, Huntsville, Mendon, New Columbus or Ovid, Hamilton or Halford, Summitville or Skippertown, New Madison or Chamnesstown, Rigdon, Omaha, Rockport, Vermillion, Willeytown, Monticello, Clarkstown, Leisure, Forrestville and Andersontown), destroyed bridges, Green Lantern, Businesses, cemeteries, government buildings, funeral homes and any happenings that have shaped our county history. The photos are from our extensive collection of photographs that have been collected over the years by Society members or have been donated to us. The collection is so vast that the photos will be rotated every quarter so that our visitors will be able to see a majority of them. Step back in history of the county and enjoy scenes of yesterday! Madison County Historical Society Monthly Meeting The Madison County Historical Society will have a monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on February 27, 2012 at the History Center, 11 West 11th Street, Anderson, Indiana. In conjunction with the Black History Exhibit, we will have as our speaker, "Jumpin" Johnnie Wilson. Come early and get your seat. For more information, please call (765) 683-0052. Photo Gallery Changed The MCHS Photo Gallery has rotated in "new" photos to be on display until the end of March. This selection is featuring scenes from the past. The gallery is featuring photos from Alexandria, Elwood, Frankton, Ingalls, Lapel, Linwood, Markleville, Orestes, Pendleton, Perkinsville, and Summitville. When you visit the Black History exhibit, just walk down the hall and take a look at the photos. Genealogy Connections Mark you calendar now!! You may attend any class and/or all the classes and activities. These are all free events and will be held in the Bowman Room at the History Center, 15 W. 11th Street, Anderson, Indiana. Show Cancelled by WHBU The radio show, "Anderson Live", is no longer broadcasting at WHBU. Stephen Jackson, County Historian, had been a regular guest on the show hosted by Doug Zook. Doug has moved on to another job and the show no long has a host and broadcast time. Steve is hoping that he can find a show to be on at a later date. We will keep you informed. Thank you very much for your support of this program and the Society through this show. The Madison County Historical Society publishes The Gazette quarterly for its members. The Gazette is also published here on our website to keep our friends nation-wide informed of our activities. Click the link above to see the latest issue. You to can become a member of MCHS by signing up for a membership. Your support will be greatly appreciated! Exhibits Coming The next MCHS Exhibit is the "Black History" exhibit which is now set to open around February 1. The exhibit will be open during our public hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit is in the Exhibit Hall at 7 West 11th Street, Anderson, Indiana. Please note that you do not have to wait for an exhibit to visit the History Center. We are open to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 9 am to 4 pm. Civil War Roundtable The Civil War Roundtable is back and will meet at the History Center, 11 West 11th Street, Anderson, Indiana, on Monday, February 20, 2012, at 7 p.m. There will be a continued discussion of the Opposing Sides. This is a DVD series. The meeting is free to the public and everyone is invited to attend. |
